What parents need to know Before sending students back to school safely

As the new school year gets underway, ensuring your child’s safety and well-being is a top priority. At The Spine Center of Louisiana, we’re dedicated to promoting healthy spinal habits, especially during the back-to-school season.

Did you know that the right backpack can play a crucial role in preventing back pain and promoting good posture? Here are some expert tips to help you choose the best backpack for your child.

1. The Right Backpack: What To Look For

Important features to support your student’s spine:

  • Padded, Adjustable Shoulder Straps: Wide and padded straps help distribute weight evenly across the shoulders. Make sure they are adjustable for a snug fit.
  • Padded Back Panel: A padded back provides extra comfort and protects from sharp edges of items inside the bag.
  • Multiple Compartments: Compartments help distribute the load evenly, preventing all the weight from settling at the bottom of the bag.
  • Lightweight Material: Choose a lightweight backpack to minimize additional weight.

2. Proper Backpack Use: Do’s and Don’ts

Do:

  • Use both shoulder straps to prevent strain on one side of the body.
  • Pack heavier items close to the back.
  • Keep the weight of the backpack to 10-15% of your child’s body weight.

Don’t:

  • Let your child wear the backpack over one shoulder.
  • Allow the backpack to hang more than four inches below the waistline.
  • Overpack the backpack with unnecessary items.

3. Regular Checks & Maintenance

Check your child’s backpack regularly to ensure it’s not too heavy. Encourage your child to only carry what is necessary for the day. A quick weekly clean-out can also help reduce excess weight.

4. Encourage Good Habits

Remind your child to use lockers or desks at school to store heavy books and materials. This practice not only lightens their load but also promotes better posture throughout the day.
